Hi, I’m Jen Tan

Theatre director, dramaturg and actor based in the North West of England. My work is playful, authentic and dynamic, partnered with a curiosity and love of live storytelling that truly connects people. My background – Yorkshire and Indonesian-Chinese – informs my work and influences my practice.

I have worked as a director, dramaturg, associate artist and assistant director at major theatres and theatre companies including Manchester International Festival, Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, Improbable, New Earth Theatre, Tamasha and Chester Storyhouse. I have received support from, and developed work with, the new work departments of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Donmar Warehouse. I have worked closely with writers including Matilda Feyiṣayọ Ibini, Tom Morton-Smith and Julie Tsang, and I have worked alongside directors including Phelim McDermott, Kirsty Housley, Melly Still and Kristine Landon Smith.

My route into theatre has taken me from a Molecular Biology degree at University College London, through IT Consultancy with a major multinational, to the Oxford School of Drama’s acting course and the position of Head of Engineering for the multi award-winning fitness game developer, Six to Start.

Recent work includes: Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat by Mark Ravenhill for Chester Storyhouse Young Company, Fix by Julie Tsang at Pleasance Theatre London for New Earth, I Walk In Your Words at the Vault Festival and Of Being Alone in a Forest by Tom Morton-Smith at Arcola for The Miniaturists.
